About these counting worksheets

Counting is more than saying numbers in order. On these sheets, kids see a target picture, then a mixed group of pictures. They count only the ones that match and circle the right number. Looking past the other pictures takes focus, which is just what careful counting needs.

That small twist teaches children to count carefully and touch each object once. Preschool pages use up to five matching pictures, and kindergarten pages go up to ten, with more pictures mixed in to look past. Each page starts with a solved example to show how it works.

Skills your child practices

Tips for grown-ups

  • Have your child touch or cross off each picture as they count.
  • Ask 'How do you know?' after they answer.
  • Practice counting toys, steps and snacks during the day.

Questions parents ask

How high should a preschooler be able to count?

It varies widely. Many preschoolers are working toward counting small groups of objects accurately, which matters more than reciting high numbers.

My child skips or double counts. What helps?

Ask them to touch each picture or cross it off as they count. Moving left to right in rows also helps.

What's the next step after counting?

Comparing groups and simple adding are natural next steps. Try the more or less and math facts sheets.
