About these picture word matching worksheets

Matching a picture to its word helps kids practice reading and vocabulary at the same time. Each puzzle has pictures on one side and words on the other, and kids draw lines to connect the pairs. Crossing off each match as you go keeps it tidy.

Kindergarten pages use short three-letter words. First and second grade use longer words. Third grade and up switch to opposites, like hot and cold or float and sink, which stretches vocabulary further. Each page starts with a solved example so kids know what to do.

Skills your child practices

  • ✓ Reading simple words
  • ✓ Vocabulary
  • ✓ Linking words to meaning
  • ✓ Opposites (older kids)

Tips for grown-ups

  • Read each word aloud before matching.
  • Cross off words as they're used.
  • Ask your child to use a word in a sentence.

Questions parents ask

Do matching worksheets help with reading?

Yes. Connecting a written word to a picture practices decoding and checks understanding at the same time.

What are good first words for kids to read?

Short words with three sounds, like cat, dog and sun, are a common starting point.

Why practice opposites?

Opposites build vocabulary and help kids describe and compare things more precisely.
